10 Of The Best Nigerian Music Videos Of 2016

The year 2016 no doubt has been an amazing year for music in the country. From international collaborations to new record labels and more important, fire music from left, right, middle and centre. And with fire music comes even well thought out video ideas

Here’s our list of ten of the best Nigerian music videos that we loved in the year 2016.

1. Pray For Me – Darey

This may just be my favourite of the lot because so much work was put into it. The song tells a powerful, positive story of victory against all odds and the video is even far better than you expected. With acting from veterans, Olu Jacobs and Joke Silva, this is everything and more.

2. Beep Beep – Temi Dollface

On the 2nd of August 2016 which was her birthday, drama soul artist, Temi Dollface led us into her own cosmos of self-love with the help of spoken poeticisms with the song ‘Beep Beep’ and it came with one of the most beautiful videos the year had to offer.

3. If I Start To Talk – Tiwa Savage

This video was the one video that made me tuned to all the Tiwa Savage videos I saw this year and I must mention that there was something about them all (from Bad, to Standing Ovation and Rewind) but If I Start To Talk takes the icing.

4. Soldier – Falz

After seeing this video, it’s no surprise that Falz won the AMVCA for best actor in a comedy. The acting in this video was actually top notch and maybe the beginning of the Falz-Simi chemistry but we move past that. The idea was perfect for the lyrics and the execution was absolutely brilliant.

5. Love Don’t Care – Simi

I don’t know about you but this made it to this list of top music videos and here’s why – it’s pure art. The fast motion, the choreography, the storyline and everything lends credence to the amazing work put by the artistic team and the director, Clarence Peters.

6. Jombo – Kiss Daniel

This is one of my personal favourites and I smile everytime I watch this. When you watch it, you’ll find out that the reason is not far from it. It is a cute very cheesy love story told through really amazing visuals and what’s there not to like? From Kiss Daniel’s perfect facial expressions to meeting his girlfriend’s family, dope all round.

7. Abule Sowo – Olamide

Olamide took it back to the roots with costume, location and it’s safe to say it was an amazing idea. Every minute of the four-minute video was a visual pleasure to the eyes. Maybe, just maybe he should do more of this because this was well made.

8. Gentleman – Ric Hassani

After mesmerising the whole of Nigeria to his Gentleman tune, Ric Hassani finished work with the visuals to the song. Asides the fact that it is such a dope video, it addresses domestic violence and sends a word out to every woman who is in an abusive relationship to leave.

9. Kontrol – Maleek Berry

Did you say cool, flirty and colourful? That’s everything that Maleek Berry comes with his ‘Kontrol’ video. This video was made right in time for summer 2016 and blended with the theme. And the biggest shocker in all this is that Maleek is more of a behind the scenes person. Hope to see more of this next year.

10. Emergency – D’banj

D’banj surprised us with Emergency at the Globacom CAF Awards earlier this year when he performed this song and he has made an excellent video to cap it up. It has strong Felaesque vibes, the choreography is amazing and we’re here for it.
