2016 has seen a lot of high and lows and celebrity relationships were not spared either.
Some of our favourite celebrities, called it quits in the romance department in shocking moves which led many fans to doubt that the fairy tale love story can hold true in this century.
From attempted suicide, radio silence and blind sided divorces, here are some of the shocking celebrity splits for the year 2016.
Edible Catering, Witchcraft and Others- The Tiwa Teebillz Saga
Teebillz shockingly ended his marriage to Tiwa Savage on Instagram, in April but not before opening a can of worms. Witchcraft, infidelity, suicide attempt, drug abuse, EFCC, were some of the many elements that came to play in the drama that started on April 28.
On the said day when things began to unravel, Teebillz accused his mother-in-law of witchcraft, and accused Tiwa Savage of infidelity and neglecting their home in pursuit of fame.
Initially, people rationed that it must be a hack given the estranged couple’s fairy tale wedding and the unprecedented manner of the episode. Then came Tiwa’s all-revealing interview, exposing edible catering and Tunji’s other indiscretions, her miscarriage in Jamaica, his alleged drug problem and trouble with EFCC. The drama almost sent Teebillz over the edge as he attempted to commit suicide save for the timely intervention of celebrity friends.
You’ve Been Served- Angelina Jolie’s Blindsiding Move
On September 19, Angelina Jolie shocked the world by filing for divorce from Brad Pitt after a 2-year marriage and 12-year relationship. The pair who were one of Hollywood’s most loved couples parted, due to an incident with Brad and their oldest son, aboard a private airplane.
Angelina Jolie who obviously does not subscribe to her estranged husband’s parenting skills had noted that Brad had anger issues and was abusing alcohol and drugs, and immediately requested primary custody of all six children. Because the internet never forgets, memes of a celebratory Jennifer Aniston filled the wed. After all Brad dumped her for Jolie. Karma was serving cold vengeance.
Suffice to say, no one saw the split coming and though months have passed in which Brad has been investigated by child services, been granted supervised visits with the kids and done voluntary drug testing, we still can’t believe #Brangelina is history,
Lilian Esoro and Radio Silence
Nobody would have guessed that in less than a year of marriage, Ubi Franklin and Lilian Esoro would be over. Their split was unnoticed for a while and might have been that way for longer, if not for the watchful eyes of folks on social media.
Though she was quite private with her marriage, Lilian Esoro went radio silent as regards her husband and everything that pertained to him.
First off, she was seen without her wedding ring in multiple pictures on Instagram and when she did not promote Ubi’s restaurant like their celebrity friends, people immediately knew something was up.
However, the proof that their romance had fizzled out came on the day of their first wedding anniversary, November 1. Ubi Franklin wrote a long ode to his wife praising her. Lilian on the other hand, did not even acknowledge the event and instead posted a throwback picture. Then, the internet went wild.
It is unknown what did them in, but maybe, 2017 will reveal this or better still bring along a reconciliation for the pair.
Grammys, a Few Kisses and Poof!
Rihanna and Drake shattered our hearts to smithereens when they broke off their relationship. Though they had been linked a couple of times in the past, everybody held out hope that this time, these two would stay together especially after that moving ‘I’ve been in love with her since i was 22‘ declaration by Drake on the Grammys’ stage. But alas, it was not to be.
It came so suddenly. One week the internet was splashed with pictures of them necking and kissing in a club and while we were still cooing that Drake finally got his dream girl and how cute their baby (ies) would be (there were pictures online), it was over and done with.
While Drake has allegedly moved on to the very much older JLo, Rihanna is being as bad-ass as ever shutting down fashion, music and movies.
But Why? Jhene Aiko and Dot Da Genius
One minute, Oladipo Omishore a.k.a Dot Da Genius revealed he was married to Jhene Aiko in a cute Instagram post on her birthday, the next, the pair were calling each other out. Whatever happened between these events, it definitely gave no warning as to this shocking celebrity split
The news of this split led to an all -out twitter fight between Jhene Aiko and Nigerians as we did not find this funny at all and went on social media to side with ‘our brother.’ Many accused Jhene of cheating with Big Sean while still married, and some even went as far as requesting she drop her Nigerian name –Efuru, since she was no longer ‘our wife.’
The pair who are headed for what is gearing up to be a not-s0-amicable divorce (he’s asking for spousal support) and have been throwing subtle digs at each other. Heartbroken is not strong enough to describe the shock and pain this particular celebrity split brought us.
